Light Map: Welcome!

Light Map is interactive web application based on client-server architecture. It is designed to create, publish and view geographical maps using web browser. Server side of Light Map is a number of PHP scripts plus MySQL database engine used to access data quickly. Cient side is Java applet that is embedded into web page. Client side java applet talks to server by means of simple HTTP queries.
Client applet renders map and allows user to freely navigate over it. User can zoom, move map because all data stored in vector format, but it is possible to display raster objects on map such as raster maps or icons. Applet is smart enough to request only data that is needed by user. Server is also smart enough to send only data that was not received by client yet. This means that network traffic between these two is minimal, allowing to create huge map projects with many thousands of objects without need of long download process.
